Why Are Asia And Europe Separate Continents Despite Being Connected?

Follow
Curious Queries

If you take a look at a world map and examine the continents, you'll notice that each continent is separate from the others. For example, Australia is all by itself in the ocean, and the Antarctic continent is also isolated. Africa is separated from the surrounding continents by the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. North and South America may seem connected, but they are actually separated by many rivers and bodies of water in the region of Central America, like the atrato River in Colombia, its tributaries, and the Panama Canal. So, each continent is truly distinct from the others. Based on this, we can call each of them a continent logically.

But let's set all of this aside and focus on Europe and Asia. There's nothing that separates them, no ocean, sea, or anything of the sort. These two continents are seamlessly connected, like one continent. However, despite this, we still consider them as separate continents: Asia and Europe.
