Mixing African and American Cichlids is technically wrong and could end in a not so happy tank owner with very unhappy fish. But in this hobby there are some exceptions to the rule. My African Cichlid tank has had Central American Cichlids (Blood Parrot Cichlid) since its inception.

My African cichlids with blood parrot tank is evidence that this mix can be done, even though its not recommended in the hobby to do so. Normally you wouldn't but every individual fish is different. So depending on your circumstances this can be done successfully.

Understanding the requirements each fish needs is important, but keep in mind that some of these rules can be bent...just a bit, here and there.
