One of the unusual things about Maine Coons is that they are fascinated with water. This might be due to their history of traveling on ships in the Atlantic Ocean. They were the cat of choice for seafarers because of their hunting skills and healthy, robust build.

According to many surveys, Maine Coons are one of the most popular breeds in America. PetMD ranks them as 2nd most popular; VetStreet ranks them as 3rd most popular; and TICA ranks them as the 3rd most popular breed in their registry.

A Maine Coon named Cosey won Best In Show at the first cat show in US history. It was held in 1895 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Mrs. Norris, the character in the Harry Potter movies, was played by Maine Coon animal actors.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the longest cat ever was a Maine Coon named Stewie, who measured 48.5 inches from nose to tailbone!

Some Maine Coon cats have more toes than other cats. They are known as Maine Coon Polydactyls.
