On Sunday, October 20, three female African elephants from the Toronto Zoo in Ontario, Canada, arrived safely at PAWS ARK 2000 sanctuary in San Andreas, California. Their trip was funded by Emmy Awardwinning game show host, Bob Barker, who ardently advocated for the move. The elephants, Toka, age 43, Thika, age 33, and Iringa, age 44, will eventually share an 80acre natural habitat with PAWS' three African elephants, Mara, Maggie and Lulu.
Iringa, Toka and Thika spent their first night in the barn and the next morning PAWS keepers let them out into the small yard adjoining the barn. Here they will have the chance to get used to the sights, sounds and smells of their new home. Their introduction to Mara, Maggie and Lulu, and the large habitat the six elephants will share, will be done carefully, and on "elephant time", and may take weeks or even months.
