Histotripsy: Fighting Cancer with Bubbles

Carrie Kumpel, a high school teacher from Bakersfield, CA, was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer that spread to her liver. Over the past 5 years she had been through a variety of systemic treatments, ranging from radiation pills to chemotherapy, all exacting a physical toll on her body. Looking for alternative treatments, Carrie learned about clinical trials for a treatment called Histotripsy, a noninvasive cancer treatment that uses ultrasound to break up tumor cells. There are no incisions, no radiation and none of the physical recovery that comes with traditional treatments. It was the perfect treatment for Carrie as she continued her battle with cancer.
