The Dulles Greenway Eagle Cam Season 20242025
FLYING HIGH: Bald Eagles are built for soaring and watching over the terrain as they hunt. Their large, broad wings help them catch thermals for easier lift and keep them aloft. Normal cruising speed for a Bald Eagle is around 3035 mph, but when they go into a dive, they can reach speeds upwards of 100 mph.
How far can an eagle fly in a day? In general, observations are that eagles travel anywhere from 50125 miles in a day. That may not seem like a very far distance, but keep in mind that flying takes a lot of energy! Even with the wind pushing at their backs, they still have to fly up to those cruising heights where the wind currents are strong. Therefore, eagles have to stop each day to find food and rest. After a few days or a few weeks, they arrive at their destination. Information courtesy of the National Eagle Center
