George Russell and Max Verstappen are the latest Formula 1 drivers to engage in a fierce war of words and it feels like battle lines have been drawn for a rivalry that’s set to run and run.
So what caused Russell to call out Verstappen so publicly, and Verstappen to double down on calling Russell a liar?
Russell gave a briefing to select media, including The Race, ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, alleging Verstappen threatened to deliberately crash with him in Qatar and put George ‘on his head’ in the wall. Russell also called Verstappen a “bully” and said it was time to stand up to him. 
He had plenty else to say too.
