In this video, The Lallantop's Upasana Verma explained about the Advaita Vedanta philosophy of Adi Shankaracharya. Advaita Vedanta, expounded by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century, is one of the most profound and influential schools of Indian philosophy. The term "Advaita" literally means "nondual," reflecting the central tenet of this philosophy: that there is no fundamental difference between the individual self (Atman) and the ultimate reality or cosmic consciousness (Brahman). According to Advaita Vedanta, the world of multiplicity and duality that we experience through our senses is an illusion (Maya), created by ignorance (Avidya) of the true nature of reality. Shankaracharya’s teachings emphasize that liberation (Moksha) can only be attained by realizing this essential oneness. The Atman, often mistaken for the individual ego or self, is in fact Brahman — infinite, eternal, and unchanging. To awaken to this realization, one must transcend the layers of Maya through selfinquiry (Jnana Yoga), meditation, and the renunciation of attachment to worldly desires. Adi Shankaracharya’s contribution to Indian spirituality was also practical. He established four major monastic centers (mathas) in different regions of India to preserve and propagate Vedantic teachings. His commentaries on the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, and Brahma Sutras became foundational texts for Advaita Vedanta, bridging complex metaphysical ideas with practical guidance for seekers. The essence of Advaita Vedanta lies in the realization that the individual self and the universe are one — that the distinction between "I" and "you," or "subject" and "object," is ultimately false. By realizing this truth, a person can attain liberation from the cycle of birth and death, experiencing eternal bliss (Ananda) and unity with the divine.
