My neighbors tree drops these seed pods in my backyard every year. I decided I would try to make something with them instead of just throwing them in the waste bin. I used zebra wood for the end caps and part of the lid. The eye candy Komainu ultracolor shift pigment powder looks absolutely amazing combined with the superclear deep pour epoxy resin. I chose to use Waterlox original for the finish. I had a few firsts in this video. This was my first attempt at making segmented pieces to turn. Also, this is the first time I’ve made a lid for a piece. While overall I am happy with how this piece came out I am not thrilled with the lid. It feels good in the hand but just isn’t as pleasing to the eye. I may go back to this one and make some adjustments to the lid at a later date if something better comes to me. ( I left the tenon on the lid for this reason). I thought I had an original idea with this piece, but after further research I found Sprague woodturning had made a video a while back using these spiky seed pods as well. I’ve had mixed responses about this piece. Some people think it looks amazing and some say creepy. What do you think? Please let me know in the comments below. Thank you for watching.
