Wiggery Pokery (1967)

British Pathé

Kenton, Middlesex.

Brief opening sequence shows a woman and man in 18th century costume and elaborate wigs; they sit before a dressing table, talk and peer at each other's wigs.

We then see a young girl waking up and getting out of bed; putting on her negligee, she sits before a dressing table mirror and ruffles her medium length blonde hair. C/U of her face blurs as we go into a dream sequence where the girl has her idea of perfect hair; she sits at a typewriter, wearing a long, straight, blonde wig and flicks the 'hair' over her shoulder to answer the telephone. She thinks again, and we see her in a bikini, reclining on a sunlounger and wearing a shorter, backcombed blonde wig and alice band; she sips a drink.

Various shots of the girl sitting before a mirror as wig expert, Ramon French, fits different styles onto her head. Some wig fitters comb and cut wigs on dummy heads; one girl sets a blonde wig on curlers. Another girl has an elaborate brown wig with ringlets at the back fitted and admires her reflection in a mirror.

Our daydreaming girl is seen having a romantic dinner with a man; she wears a brown wig with a highly back combed back section. The man is totally fascinated by her beautiful hair! The girl is then seen before a mirror, putting a blonde wig, similar to her real hair, over a red cycling helmet so that just the peak of the helmet is showing. She goes outside to get on the back of a man's motorbike; he looks rather bemused as she climbs aboard and they ride off along a suburban street.

Note: there is a letter on file from David Block Associates about the making of this film. This is a great story; lovely shots of the girl daydreaming. The commentary focuses on the male point of view i.e. the cost and whether it is reasonable for a girl to bewitch a man with a wig, rather than her own hair! Cuts exist see separate record.
