Well, I believe it comes down to technique and tools. You need to be thorough and methodical when it comes to brushing your dog's coat to ensure you brush out ALL the knots so the coat doesn't matt as the weeks progress. You also need to use the appropriate tools designed for dog's coats, otherwise you're fighting a losing battle. Human grade brushes and plastic combs DO NOT suit your needs when it comes to a dog's coat. They simply do not have the strength to break up a thick coat and brush it out.
