When at rest your pet should take about 12- 35 breaths per minute.

Dr. Lisa Lippman

Additionally if they are breathing shallowly and rapidly or deeply and slowly these are not normal breathing patterns
If your pet is taking more than 35 breaths in one minute repeatedly but otherwise seems normal then you can repeat this count over the next 13 hours to see if it's consistent. If your pet has an increased respiratory rate or effort as described seek veterinary care right away.
Remember it's important to take the rate at rest not when panting, excited, stressed or purring.
More context: remember each rise and fall of
the chest = 1 breath. You can count over 30
seconds and multiply by 2, count over 15 seconds and multiply by 4 or count over the whole minute.
Practice a few times a month to get the hang of it and see what's normal for your pet before you need this. Also consult with your amazing vet per usual.
In general this is especially important in pets with advanced heart disease but also asthma and many other ailments and trauma.
There are apps that can help you track like Cardalis or search in the App Store for pet breathing heart rate
