US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on December 10 reaffirmed what he called his country’s “ironclad” deterrence commitment to Japan and South Korea in the face of challenges posed by China in the East China Sea. Austin also met Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Tuesday to discuss regional issues. Austin flew into Japan on Sunday (December 8) night after cancelling a planned trip to South Korea, following President Yoon Suk Yeol’s botched attempt last week to impose martial law.
