Hundreds of thousands of troops and civilians killed and wounded, six million Ukrainians displaced abroad and two million homes damaged or destroyed.

That is the devastating cost of two years of war. Russia marked the anniversary with another barrage of deadly attacks across the country while Ukraine used drones to hit a plant which produces some 18% of Russia's steel output.

Ukrainians say the war started in 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea and sent troops into the Donbas region after the Euromaidan protests ousted Kremlinbacked President Viktor Yanukovych.

This is what Russia controls after two years of war, during which it has seized, but also lost territory. This is how an exhausted Ukraine is marking the anniversary.
