Trailer Tire Blow Out | Full Time RV Living

A highspeed tire blowout driving an RV with a car trailer in tow? That’s just part of the (not so great) adventure of full time RV living.

Some of our biggest fears as fulltime RV’ers are having a highspeed blowout or getting into an accident while on the road. Today, one of those fears became real.

Lucky for us, no one was hurt, and the damage to our tow trailer was minimal. This incident left us wondering what else we could do to increase our safety on the road, and how to avoid similar type of issues in the future.

Here’s what we did to address this emergency situation:

1. Pulledover to the side of the road as quickly as we could do so safely.
2. Turned on all hazard lights (even the ones on the car!) so other drivers can see us.
3. Called our road hazard assistance program (Good Sam) to get a response process started.
4. Call any other “double coverage” you may have via insurance, AAA, etc.
a. One or the other may take a long time to respond, so I like to create options early! ;)
5. Take pictures. Document what happened thoroughly with dates, times, and locations. Most smartphone cameras will document all of these things for you via GPS!
6. Ensure comfort and safety of all passengers – including furry ones! (We turned off our coach engine and started the power generator to run A/C to keep all of our boys comfy.)
7. Move your vehicle to safe location if you must and/or vacate it of all occupants.
8. Check your vehicle for proper operation and handling before launching back into you journey.
9. If you’re entering back onto a highspeed road, take your time. Watch for a break in traffic, keep hazard lights on until you’re at highway speed, and remember it can take a LONG stretch of road to get there – especially if you’re towing a vehicle or trailer!

This was a potentially dangerous situation that we got out of with very little damage. Two key things that helped us both were to stay calm and keep a sense of humor about it. Instead of stressing out and arguing, we made this video and had several good laughs. It’s not what happens, but how you handle it that determines the experience for you.
