Rajeswari Sengupta is an economics professor. She has been studying the Indian economy for the last 10 years. Her interests lie in the fields on international finance, monetary policy, banking, and national accounts measurement.
In this video, Rajeswari speaks with Sanjuktha Athreya, researcher at XKDR Forum, on problems with official statistical systems in India. She argues that what was once a worldrenowned system is now a mere shadow of itself due to a combination of factors such as resource constraints, shortage of good statisticians, political interference, and lack of accountability and transparency. She enumerates some of the major deficiencies of the system and talks about how trust in official statistics has eroded over time.
