Swimming and other forms of aquatic movement are not only excellent forms of cardiovascular exercise and strength development, but also incredible catalysts for mental and emotional health changes. Though not all of these changes are well understood, they are still well documented. It is possible that these changes may have something to do with an innate human affinity for the water. A biological theory known as the "aquatic ape theory" or the "waterside hypothesis" has long been espoused by some in the academic community as a potential explanation for not only human affinity for coastal communities and water, but also as an explanation for certain biological traits seen in humans and other aquatic mammals, but not seen in the other great apes.
