Genetics can be tricky. When breeding dogs and cats, you've really got to know what you're doing. Certain desirable traits, something as simple as fur color patterns, can bring with them hidden genetic flaws that cause health issues. Deafness, blindness, and even both can happen in puppies when you breed two merlecoated dogs together. But should these deaf and/or blind puppies be put down? Usually, the answer is no. They just need to find the right home. Join us as we discover what a Double Merle Dog is, what is involved in their training and care, and how to avoid this problematic genetic mutation in the future. Gillian Symington, Double Merle Dog Mom (and coproducer and editor): Gillian Symington welcomed her first rescue dog home in her early twenties but was born into a house with dogs and can't imagine life without them. She later adopted Strider, featured in this documentary, who also happened to be deaf. His adoption led to bringing Snow into the family. Like Strider, she is a double merle (blind and deaf) and featured in this doc. Gillian is now an official dog lady with three dogs and a husband somewhere in the house.

We met when Gillian reached out to me via Kurī K9 Massage to hire me for massage therapy treatment for Strider, one of two Double Merle dogs who were part of her pet family at the time. We struck up a friendship, and I learned more about Double Merle dogs through working with Strider and also meeting her other dog, Snow, who is deaf and blind.
