In September, many cows have to say goodbye to their beloved Alpine meadows in the swiss alps. For three months, the cows were allowed to graze outside to their heart's content. With the cooler temperatures in the swiss alps and the lack of grass, they now have to return to the valleys.
These socalled “Alpabfahrten” are traditionally celebrated with decorated cows and bells. The herdsmen start cleaning the cows early in the morning, distributing the headdresses and bells until they all walk down into the valley together.
