In this video I show you how I use concrete blocks to create a stand for a tank.

Aquarium stands are an important but often overlooked part of setting up an aquarium. Getting a new aquarium (even at a bargain) doesn't guarantee that you'll be able to get up and running right away, especially if you don't have a strong and level surface to put it on.

There are many options for aquarium stands. You can buy a new aquarium stand from a pet store which is usually the most expensive option (sometimes costing more than the tank itself). You can also buy a used aquarium stand from a hobbyist on Craigslist or OfferUp, etc. but you cannot be sure if it has had any type of damage to it (especially important if the aquarium stand is made of MDF or particleboard). You can also build your own aquarium stand which is usually the cheapest and most customizable option but it often requires potentially expensive tools and some degree of construction and/or woodworking ability. However, there is another extremely cheap and viable option for making a strong aquarium stand the humble concrete block.

In this video, I show you how I use concrete blocks bought from a hardware store to create a strong and sturdy aquarium stand. Concrete blocks, being construction materials, are very strong and extremely cheap. I paint the blocks black and stack them in a specific configuration. Theoretically, if you place plywood, OSB, 2x4s and/or foam on top of the blocks you can actually say you have an aquarium stand. However, in my case I decided to create wooden frames out of 2x4s, foam and OSB for additional leveling and support.

And advantage of using concrete blocks for your stands is that you can customize it to any dimension you want or need while keeping your costs relatively low. Of course, concrete blocks are not exactly pretty to look at unless you are a fan of brutalist architecture, but there are many way you can pretty them up such as by painting or covering them up in some way.
