“A Cat in Sheep’s Clothing?”
Selkirk Rex Cat’s Unique Curly Coat
The Selkirk Rex’s signature curls are a result of a genetic mutation. In 1987, a litter of kittens from a spotted cat included a unique kitten with a curly coat, giving rise to what is affectionately called the “cat in sheep’s clothing.” This curly coat trait has made the Selkirk Rex stand out among cat breeds!
The Only Cat Breed Named After a Person?
The Story Behind the Selkirk Rex Name
One legend has it that this “sheeplike” kitten was raised in Wyoming and crossed with a Persian cat. The breed was then named “Selkirk” in memory of the breeder’s husband, making it the only cat breed named after a person! Another account suggests that Persian cat breeder Jeri Newman took in the curlyhaired kitten and found that three of its offspring also had the curly coat. The breed was named “Selkirk” after the nearby mountains.

Caring for Your Selkirk Rex Cat
Grooming Needs: Frequent
Exercise Time: 1020 minutes
Selkirk Rex cats have a thick, curly coat that requires regular grooming to prevent skin issues. After baths, take extra time to brush their fur straight, as this helps avoid tangles and keeps their coat easy to manage once dried.
