Sylvester McIntosh was drafted right out of high school and was offered the opportunity to become a paratrooper but decided he didn’t want to jump out of a perfectly good airplane so he joined the Marines instead. After two months of serving as an MP in Vietnam, he wanted to do something more and was assigned to the 1st Battalion 9th Marines, better known as the Walking Dead. During his tour of duty in Vietnam, McIntosh threw himself on three grenades, which were luckily duds, But on May 13, 1967, after being ambushed by the North Vietnamese Army and under heavy fire, Mctosh carried out three other wounded Marines while ignoring his own chest wound. In 2016 he received the Silver Star for his heroism.
