M15 flies into the nest bringing a heron (might be a little blue heron). What is amazing to see is a mollusk/clam/mussel that is still attached to its beak that it must have just caught and was planning on eating before it's unfortunate fate. Harriet vocalizes her excitement at the delivery and quickly serves it up to both E's. It was a very calm and peaceful feeding with no aggression with both E's getting plenty to get. At 10:05 Harriet offers a huge piece to E16 who swallows it down easily!! When the feeding is over, we get some excellent zooming of the mollusk!
Florida's Freshwater Mussels and Clams: More than 60 species of mussels or clams live in Florida's fresh waters. They usually live in sandy bottoms of lakes and streams. Mussels are an important part of our environment and are eaten by fish, birds, and mammals. They help clean the water by accumulating contaminants in their bodies and shells as they feed on microscopic particles, algae and bacteria. Scientists use mussels to evaluate the quality of water we use for swimming, fishing, and drinking. They are an important food source for many fish, birds, and mammals. Freshwater mussels and clams are affected by poor environmental conditions, therefore, their populations serve as valuable indicators of water quality and the overall health of aquatic ecosystems. Thank you for watching!
