My Season 13 Playlist on my channel includes ground videos from my summer visits to the nest pasture. There are also four ground videos from early summer (after the cams went off for Season 12), in my Season 12 Playlist. Here are the playlist links, if interested:
Season 13: • SWFL Eagles Season 13
Season 12: • SWFEC Season 12 2023/2024
Video opens with the morning incubation switch, which includes bonding/mating on the attic. M15 takes over incubation from F23, and she heads to the CSS for a preening session. F23 leaves to the NW, and CamOps catches what is most likely F23 landing on one of the power poles.
M15 is resting and incubating when he starts tracking. A subadult intruder flies in, landing on the veranda spike. M15 stays on his eggs, protecting them. He goes into defensive posture, which in his position is a raised mantle/contour feathers, while warning the intruder. The intruder heeds the warnings, leaving after a twenty second stay. The intruder flew NW, and seventeen seconds later, F23 comes into view, heading to the nest tree. She is followed by what is mostly likely the same intruder (seconds after leaving view). F23 lands in the nest tree; she and M15 both vocalize warnings. The intruder continues SW.
Although the 360 Cam does not provide as good of a view as Cams 1&2, I will give my opinion on the age of this eagle based on what we have. The beak and cere appear to be less dark than a juvenile bird; the eyes (iris) appear to have started the transformation to yellow (harder to see this on the 360 Cam); the tail feathers have started a terminal band, there are white feathers starting on the top of the head, and there is more mottling ventrally (white feathers in front) than is typical of a juvenile bird . I believe this is a bird that is turning two this season, depending on what month it hatched. I included three links for plumage/aging eagles below the time stamps. Time stamps below, if interested. Click on any time stamp to advance to that part.
Note: There is no way to determine if the intruder is from this nest. I am local to SWFL, and in Florida, we have 1500+ nests. That averages to 2K +/ fledglings each season, as I have shared often on these videos. Also, this area has a dense population. Each season, we see juvenile and subadult eagles stop in here.
