I experienced a Cessna 208 Caravan seaplane flight in Saudi Arabia. I flew from Red Sea International Airport to Ummahat Islands, where Nujuma, a RitzCarlton Reserve and St. Regis Resort are located.

■What is the Red Sea Project?
The Red Sea Project (Arabic: مشروع البحر الأحمر) is a tourism megaproject under construction on the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia. The project was announced in July 2017 by Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The project is part of the Saudi Vision 2030 program, which aims to diversify Saudi Arabia's economy away from fossil fuels by contributing to the growth of the tourism sector.
The project is located on an area of 28,000 km2 on the west coast of Saudi Arabia between the cities of Umluj and AlWajh in Tabuk Province. The area includes more than 90 pristine offshore islands, 200 km of Red Sea coastline, beaches, deserts, mountains and volcanoes. It also includes Al Wajh Lagoon, an unspoiled 2,081 km2 area containing valuable habitats (coral reefs, seagrass and mangroves) and species of global conservation importance.
Construction of the project officially began in February 2019.
In November 2023, the first destination of the Red Sea project, Six Senses Southern Dunes, opened to guests.
In January 2024, St. Regis Hotels & Resorts opened the Red Sea Project's second destination and first island resort in the Umahat Islands archipelago. In May, the second hotel in the Umahat Islands, Nujuma, a RitzCarlton Reserve, opened.
Upon completion in 2030, Red Sea aims to have 50 hotels with 8,000 rooms and more than 1,000 residential properties across 22 islands and six inland sites.
The Red Sea project will be accessible from Red Sea International Airport. The first flight to this airport will be by Saudia Airlines from Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport in September 2023. The first international flight to this airport will be by flydubai from Dubai International Airport in April 2024. The airport, with its curved design inspired by sand dunes, was designed by Foster + Partners.
Some islands, such as the Red Sea Project's Umahat Islands, are only accessible by yacht or seaplane, and Red Sea Global has established Saudi Arabia's first seaplane company, Fly Red Sea, to transport tourists to the islands using four Cessna Caravan 208 seaplanes.
