Recognizing Neurodivergent Discrimination (double empathy autism and neuroism)

Proudly Autistic

We have been told that discrimination against the neurodivergent community is ableism. However, this is not always true. While aspects of neurodiversity can present disabilities, other aspects are simply differences. Double empathy is a perfect example of this. The theory of double empathy recognizes that autistic communication differences are a difference, not a disorder. Unfortunately, we are consistently discriminated against for these differences with little recourse. The first step in challenging discrimination against autistic and other neurodivergent people for their communication differences is to label it. That is precisely what this video does. In this video, I describe the concept of neuroism, which is the exclusion and discrimination against neurodivergent people for communicating in a way consistent with their neurotype. Labeling neuroism for what it is will go a long way in our advocacy efforts.
