Are you looking for a new dog to add to the home? If so, you’ve probably been recommended countless breeds from friends, family, and maybe even coworkers! Yes, when it comes to picking out a dog, everyone has an opinion, but ultimately it’s up to you to decide what’s best for you and your situation!
A Quick Overview
Comparing Size
Standard poodles can clock in around 50 pounds at the smaller end and 70 pounds at the larger end, but that’s not your only option here. There are toy poodles out there weighing only 10 pounds, and so you can pick the one that suits your lifestyle best. When it comes to goldendoodles, there is a little more variance there, which is both good and bad depending on how you look at it. Goldendoodles tend to be a little bigger than their purebred counterparts, and can come in at over 60 pounds, but the popularity of the breed has made it pretty easy to find goldendoodles both bigger and smaller than that size.
Comparing Lifespan.
For large dogs, both the poodle and goldendoodle have excellent lifespans, which is great news! The standard poodle, when raised in proper conditions, can live between 12 and 15 years, while the goldendoodle boasts a similar lifespan of 10 to 15 years.
Comparing Appearance
While there are clearly some poodle characteristics visible on the goldendoodle, they are very different in terms of appearance, which is a big factor to many potential dog owners. The poodle is traditionally a lean, lanky animal with a deep chest and long noses. The poodle can be all one color, or a combination of colors, which is referred to as parti colors. The goldendoodle is almost the opposite of the poodle in many ways, and doesn’t have the same kind of coat variances that you would see from a poodle or even a labradoodle.
Comparing the Grooming Experience
While it’s nice to not have to clean up after a shedding dog all day, both the poodle and goldendoodle require extensive grooming time as a result, and they can easily be classified as “highmaintenance” in that regard. Even if you are taking your dog to the groomer every 4 to 6 weeks, that will not save you from daily brushing sessions to make sure your dog’s hair remains untangled, and that commitment is nonnegotiable if you pick up one of these dogs to bring home.
Comparing the Training Process
While the grooming experience might be a little intense for some, the training process for both the goldendoodle and poodle is an absolute breeze, as both these dogs are smart and want to impress their owner. They also both love treats, which makes it easy to teach either dog tricks, commands, or really anything you want to try.
Comparing Costs
These are popular breeds, but it’s also worth noting that after the initial cost is the longterm upkeep of your animal. From trips to the vet, to grooming, to giving them the proper food and toys, you are going to run up a pretty expensive bill caring for almost any dog, and the poodle and goldendoodle are no exception.
