More than half of the world’s population growth by 2050 will be from 8 countries. The Philippines is the only Southeast Asian country on the list.

With the establishment of the Commission on Population 1969, the Philippines have a decadeslong history of population planning. But this has proved challenging in a conservative, Catholicmajority country. A Reproductive Health Law languished for over a decade before being passed. Overpopulation was seen as an obstacle to socioeconomic development.

However, in 2022 something surprising happened. Births per woman tumbled to 1.9, a 70year low and a decline that exceeded expectations. Have population growth targets been achieved, and what will this mean for the Philippines?
