IMAS undergraduate students recently travelled to Maria Island for a fiveday field trip as part of our thirdyear Marine Ecology unit.
Sixtythree students took part in the trip, conducting a research project as part of the unit.
This involved either diving or snorkelling in the Marine Protected Area to undertake experiments or reef fish surveys, monitoring fish using baited remote underwater video (BRUV), measuring and tagging rock lobster, and assessing estuary function, zooplankton, intertidal species, seaweed production and seagrass photosynthesis.
They also used a lab set up in one of the island's historic buildings.
Students will use what they learnt during the trip to prepare a final research report, which goes towards their final assessment.
