MAKING THE GERMAN SHEET SWIVEL BLOCK (Ep07) ~ Building Marram ~ Catamaran Build !

The Making of Marram

It’s been a while since our last episode. Kel has been working overseas for a few weeks, We also took a short break from boat building to visit the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show.

The trip was worthwhile as we caught up with some of our current suppliers and connected with a few new ones we intend to work with.

The rigging design for this boat includes two options: a Traveller on the saloon roof or a German mainsheet system. We opted for the German mainsheet system, also known as the double mainsheet system.

The design requires a Straphead Block with a shackle to the saloon roof chainplate for the turning block. The issue we encountered is that when the sheet goes slack, the block can drop, potentially hitting the solar panels. However, we have a solution.

We have made up a swivel from 316SS and we used some Ertalon bushes for the pins to run on.

We are using a Ronstan 100mm standup block with the custom swivel base plate and will add stops to prevent the block from dropping and hitting anything when the sheet goes slack.

Marram is a Dix 470 blue water cruising catamaran designed by Dudley Dix and is intended to cruise the oceans of the world. She is being built in Melbourne Australia and is the second 470 being built, we started our journey around 2014 and began looking for a boat thinking about what we wanted. We looked at production boats & customs boats, in the end we fell in love with the Dix design. We took a few years to sort ourselves out and build our shed, during the shed building phase we worked closely with Dudley and Kevin (who owns EXO Marine), we choose to build our own CNC router and cut the kit ourselves, Kevin supplied us with the cut files and we were off and running in 2016.

We are extreme amateurs at filming and editing videos and I mean extreme! Feel free to hit like / subscribe and or leave us any constructive comments and suggestions, all will be very much appreciated as we show you our live and challenges of building Marram and getting her to the water.
