THIRTEEN

Actress Mae West became a huge Hollywood star in her late 30s, was given her own film production unit, wrote her own racy lines and chose her leading men. After a screening of the documentary American Masters – Mae West: Dirty Blonde, cohosted by THIRTEEN and Brooklyn Historical Society, panelists discussed Mae West's feminist legacy, her pioneering film career, and whether Stormy Daniels is similar to Mae West (1893–1980). The event was in honor of National Women’s Equality Day 2020.

Sally Rosenthal, Director, American Masters Mae West: Dirty Blonde, moderated the expert panel with Claudia Roth Pierpont, writer at The New Yorker; Alexis Grenell, writer and cofounder of public affairs firm Pythia Public; Rick DesRochers, Ph.D., Director of Theatre and Multimedia Performance, Lehman College, City University of New York.

Mae West was a Brooklynborn, groundbreaking writer, performer, and subversive Hollywood film star. In her eightdecade career, Mae West broke boundaries and possessed creative and economic powers unheard of for a female entertainer in the 1930s.
