For as long as Robert Day could remember he was always fascinated by stories of Marine heroism and had dreams of becoming a Marine rifleman himself. Pursuing his dream Day enlisted in the United States Marine Corps shortly after September 11, 2001.

During bootcamp Day found himself drawn to the M240 Machine Gun and the devastating effect the weapon could have on the enemy. After bootcamp Day was assigned to 1st Battalion, 8th Marines. His first deployment with the Marines proved to be unfulfilling for Day, but his second deployment would be just the opposite.

During his second deployment in November 2004, Day and his fellow Marines would face some of the bloodiest combat of the Iraq War during the Operation Phantom Fury, better known as The Second Battle of Fallujah.
