One of the two eggs that was laid by this loon pair broke this morning. Dad loon was on the nest and he gets up and slides into the water. Mom goes on the platform and to the eggs to incubate them. She is fidgeting & gets up and we can see the contents of the egg dripping off her chest. She returns to incubate and gets up a few times, clearly disturbed by the egg breaking. She goes into the water and then climbs on the back patio to pick up some of the eggshell and takes it into the water with her as she swims off.

A few minutes later a turtle is seen getting on the platform to sun itself. Dad loon returns and the turtle dives back into the water. Dad goes on the nest and incubates but he too realizes the egg is crushed and he will also remove the remaining eggshell from the nest.

We don't know why the egg broke. Hopefully their other egg will remain intact and will be viable. On loon cam 2 the loon pair are incubating two eggs. Thank you for watching!

In the 2023 season for Loon cam 1, territorial disputes led to the nest being left unused, a first in many years. This season, a pair has been visiting the area regularly. The female is a new member of the pair and has no record of nesting. The male has been using this nest for years and can be identified by its unique band colors—white over orange and silver over blue. The female is not banded. LPC loon cam 2 did have a successful season for 2023.
