Kirk's Dik Dik | Smallest Maasai Mara Antelope | Zebra Plains

Rob The Ranger Wildlife Videos

Two Kirk's dik dik seen on safari.
The dikdik's name is derived from its call. When they feel threatened, dikdiks lie low to prevent detection. If they are discovered, they run in a swift, zigzaglike pattern until they reach refuge in a nearby thicket. During this ‘flight’, they emit trumpetlike "zikzik" calls to raise an alarm or to harass predators and publicize the presence of a mated pair.
Dikdiks are some of the world's smallest antelopes, with the largest, the Kirk's dikdik, standing between 14 and 18 inches tall and weighing no more than 7.2 kg (16 lb). Female dikdiks tend to be 1 to 2 pounds heavier than males. They are dainty creatures with a pointed, mobile snout, large eyes and ears, prominent preorbital glands, pipestem legs, harelike hind limbs that are significantly larger than their forelimbs, and a vestigial tail. Their coats, depending upon their habitat, range from grey to graybrown with tan flanks, limbs, and an erectile head crest and whitish eye rings, ear lining, underparts, and rump.
Only male dikdiks sport horns, which are about 3 in (8 cm) long, corrugated, and backwardslanted. Horns of male Kirk's dikdiks may be straight or curved backwards from the profile of the face, and the basal half of the horns have seven to nine annular ridges that are frequently covered by the crest. Kirk's dikdiks are sexually dimorphic; females are larger and lack horns, while males sport a more developed muzzle, have a longer crest, and tend to be lighter in color.

About Rob The Ranger Wildlife Videos:
The purpose of the channel is to show what it is like to experience seeing wild animals on an African safari. Nature Documentaries are often highly edited to tell a story, wildlife safaris are not, and the idea here is to show the wildlife sightings the way they were seen. Safari tours in Africa are generally suitable for all ages and this channel can be considered an educational channel about incredible nature, some scenes in the nature videos may be more graphic than people are used to but this is the reality of nature and is what you would see if you were present on such a safari in person. Safaris in Kenya, South Africa, or any other African country are an unrivalled experience for anyone with a passion for nature, wildlife photography, and travel. Hopefully the animal videos on this channel can provide a glimpse into what the nature experience is like and encourage more people to take a wildlife safari one day.
