I was not yet 10 years old when i first heard this exquisite recording and it would be some time before I would find out the title and the singer who performed it. 'Amoureuse' is for me, the song that triggered my obsession with pop music one that has served me for more than 45 years. I vividly recall sitting on the floor listening to my wireless radio, a hand made object by my Uncle who was not only a handy man, but a brain surgeon to boot! This radio came to be one of the most important possessions I ever had. Hearing the haunting strains of 'Amoureuse', i was transfixed and in the years and decades since, Kiki Dee's performance has continued to delight and soothe me. It is one of the great vocal turns of the era. Peaking at #13 in Britain, many months later the song would rise to #12 here in Australia, and was used as a B side for a couple of other Kiki Dee singles around that time. Helen Reddy recorded an adaptation of it 'Emotion' only a few months after it was a hit in Oz for Kiki Dee. Helen's version reached #22 in America.
'Amoureuse' and the French original were written and recorded by Veronique Sanson in 1972. This song is one of those that helped to define me. With thanks to the composer and the singer. Pop music has indelible power.
