In this video we take a look at an ecosphere I built intended for Christmas Moss. The Moss eventually went extinct within the jar due to the Dwarf Amphipods overgrazing and eventually overpopulating the ecosphere.
A new plant species took it's place and grows to create canopies within the ecosphere. The Amphipods graze on the stems of the plants, which causes them to thin over time. Eventually they chew through the whole stem, causing the severed branch to sink to the bottom of the ecosphere. This severed branch can then grow roots and becomes it's own plant. This ensures the canopy is always changing.
Alongside the Dwarf Amphipods there are also Ostracods, Daphnia, Worms and a single Ramshorn Snail. The Daphnia and Ostracods have reproduced dramatically. They can be seen throughout the ecosphere and create an active and interesting ecosystem to spectate.
The Ramshorn snail however failed to ever produce offspring. This is due to the Amphipods eating their eggs and young. The Ramshorn snail is over a year old now and it looks as though it will never breed within this ecosphere. Ramshorn snails only live on average for a year so it's likely he'll die of old age before the next update video.
Extinctions have already occurred within this ecosphere. Both the Christmas Moss and the String Algae have died out completely due to the Amphipod population. The Ramshorn Snail will be the first animal species to go extinct.
