It Is Well with My Soul, written in 1873 by Horatio Spafford.

After much trial in his life from the death of his four year old son, the 1871 Chicago fires that destroyed much of his real estate investments, and the economic downturn of 1873, Spafford planned to travel to England to assist with some of D. L. Moody's evangelistic campaigns. Somewhat last minute, he decided to send his family ahead while he was delayed dealing with some zoning issues due to the fires. Tragically, the ship carrying his wife and four daughters struck another ship while crossing the Atlantic ocean. While his wife, Anna, survived, all four daughters were lost. Shortly thereafter, as Spafford sailed to meet his grieving wife, he was inspired to write these words as his ship passed near the spot where his daughters had died.
