How do you know your dog needs BOAS surgery?
A BOAS assessment is one of the tools to identify if your dog has clinically relevant disease (other tools include a CT scan etc..), it also has other uses which we talk about in this video!
I learned how you conduct a BOAS assessment on flatfaced/ brachycephalic breed dogs (eg. pugs, french bulldogs, english bulldogs) from Lydia, an awesome specialist nurse and BOAS assessor. BOAS assessments are done to determine whether your dog requires surgery, medical treatment or further monitoring, as well as research with aims to improve breed health longterm.

What is BOAS?
Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) refers to a group of conditions in brachycephalic (short skull shape and hence flat faced) dogs. Due to extreme breeding conformation, they have anatomical defects (increased amounts of soft tissue in their short skull) and a myriad of health issues that most people are not aware about . With this video, we hope to bring awareness and signpost some resources on BOAS and educate others on what goes on in a BOAS assessment.
