Belfast is a city with a rich history. In the 19th century, it played an important role in the shipbuilding trade, with many locals working in the shipyards and building families and communities in East Belfast, where rows of terraced housing were constructed for the ship workers. This period marked decades of economic opportunity and industrial boom in the city.
However, this all came to an end in the mid20th century when East Belfast's shipbuilding industry began to decline, and thousands of workers lost their jobs, leading to widespread economic hardship. This, combined with the increased tensions and conflict resulting from the Troubles, meant that East Belfast has long faced high levels of poverty, division, and a lack of opportunity.
East Belfast Mission is a charity that has been transforming the lives of their community for the past 200 years. They do this by providing the people of East Belfast with the building blocks they need to create better futures and opportunities for themselves, offering services to alleviate the numerous challenges their community faces.
In this video, Andrew Bass (Senior Grants Officer at Benefact Trust) visits East Belfast Mission to see the work being done to transform and revive the community.
He visits their community fridge, funded with support from a Benefact Trust Community Impact Grant, and speaks to Revd. Brian Anderson, Lianne Mullholland, and Robert from the team.
