⚠ HOW YOU CAN HELP GANNETS (and other seabirds)

Seabird species are facing grave threats, including avian flu and dwindling food stocks. Here are five simple ways that you can help protect them:

Follow the ‘check, clean, close’ rule: Predators like rats or stoats can wreak havoc among seabird eggs and chicks if they arrive at colonies. So, if you’re planning a trip, please check your bag and clothes for pests; clean your boots or shoes with disinfectant; and tightly close any food containers shut (since they can attract stowaways onto boats or into bags).

Give seabirds space: Ensure that you maintain a good distance from nests and birds that are feeding. People and dogs may disturb or destroy the nests or burrows of seabirds that raise their young close to the shore (1 April to 30 September).

Sign up to a campaign: Look out for seabird (or wildlife) focused campaigns you could back, helping to persuade politicians to support higher levels of environmental protection, stewardship and biodiversity. Of particular concern to seabird numbers is the impact of fishing practices that damage the seabed and health of some of the fish stocks (on which seabirds feed).

Become a citizen scientist: You can also help by taking part in the research and monitoring of seabirds, as citizen seabird scientists for various charities. Look out for seabirdrelated citizen science projects online!

Get involved! Take immediate action to protect our valuable seabird colonies before it’s too late. By donating to various projects and charities, YOU can help to support vital monitoring projects to better understand avian flu, invest in innovative biosecurity solutions, and support research on a global response to help seabirds survive dwindling food stocks, avian flu and climate change. If donating isn’t a possibility for you, you can still have a huge impact by spreading the word of seabirds and the threats they face on social media or between your friends and family!

Who am I?

My name is Rachel Bigsby, and I am a 26yearold wildlife photographer and Nikon creator with a passion for seabirds and coldclimate wildlife and a flair for capturing natural artistry! My skills are entirely selftaught, and my connection to the natural world was inherited from my late grandfather.

My work has been awarded in several of the world’s most prestigious competitions including Wildlife Photographer of the Year (winner of natural artistry) and Bird Photographer of the Year (portfolio winner), and published by National Geographic.

Beside my personal work as a wildlife photographer and Nikon creator, I am a contributing photographer for the RSPB, a proud Youth Ambassador for Badger Trust and Fotospeed, a competition judge for the RSPCA and Pro Partner to Shimoda, Tenba and Benro.

I am also a wildlife photography workshop leader and an emerging natural history broadcaster, with many UK television credits including BBC’s The One Show and BBC Springwatch.

It is my mission to connect a global audience to overlooked species like seabirds with captivating photographs which spark a new found love or interest, perhaps empowering change, while representing and inspiring young people.
