In this video, our trainer reviews the Herm Sprenger Black Stainless Steel Prong Collar. As mentioned, this version of the prong collar is more expensive than the normal stainless steel collar, but it is higher quality. It functions exactly like other Herm Sprenger prong collars but it does offer a few cool benefits. The main downside of the standard chrome nickel plated prong collar is that they often discolor a dog’s fur. This is not permanent and usually washes off, but on white or light furred dogs, this is very noticeable. The Herm Sprenger Black Prong Collar decreases the chance of your dog’s fur becoming stained!

Some dogs also have sensitivity to metals, and we often recommend the Herm Sprenger Black Stainless Steel as an alternative to help if their dog has those issues. Nickel is one of the most common metal allergies in dogs. This collar is stainless steel and does not contain nickel, making this better for dogs with metal sensitivities and on top of that, the collar will not rust! One of the last benefits is it can be low profile compared to the shiny nickel plated prong. Let’s face it, dogs always look better when they appear to not have a collar on!

Herm Sprenger also offers a prong collar made of Curogan, which contains no nickel and recommended for dogs who have extreme metal sensitivities. This collar is similar to a rose gold. Curogan is a Coppertinalloy which has a high copper content and some additives which make the material strong and nickelfree. These collars will not discolor fair haired dogs and most dogs with metal allergies are fine on this collar.

In some cases where a dog needs a prong collar, but they cannot tolerate any metal at all, we have used Starmark Prong collars. These are made of plastic and are less durable. We only consider these if no other options are available. You can see them here: https://amzn.to/3JFQU7B



Herm Sprenger prong collars come with a trachea plate, which protects your dog from trachea damage. This is the center plate in the collar.

Herm Sprenger collars come in a variety of sizes. We generally recommend the small size (2.25mm) and the medium (3.03.25mm) for all breeds. Some of these collars come in bigger sizes (Large) and lose their effectiveness and are extremely hard to take on and off.

Keep in mind that prong collars are only effective if fitted correctly. The trachea plate should be on the dog’s trachea and you should be able to get 2 fingers under the collar between it and your dog’s neck. Any less and it is too tight and any more and the collar is too loose. The collar itself should sit about 2 inches below their jaw. When it sits higher up on your dog’s neck you will get more control and be able to correct softer.

To sum everything up, all of the collars that Herm Sprenger offers are great! If your dog has allergies to nickel or has light fur then you should consider the Black Stainless Steel or the Curogan collar.
