Heliopolis, Cairo, Egypt The place that in Greek is translated to "sun city" and which is considered the major city of ancient Egypt and the sun that lights the new modern Cairo, Egypt, these days.

In Cairo, Egypt, there are now different residence areas found out there, but those which are considered the oldest are downtown, Cairo, as well as Heliopolis area, and this could be witnessed from the old buildings that combine atheism, European, and Islamic designs all in the same place.

Historically, Heliopolis was the major city of ancient Egypt, it was the capital of the 13th or Heliopolite Nome of lower Egypt and a major religious center. There were different temples and other buildings in this area that were mostly destroyed in order to build medieval Cairo, yet there are some buildings that are living until this day, such as Baron Palace, the Obelisk of the Temple of RaAtum which is now called AlMasalla and found in AlMatariyyah in Cairo, as well as those buildings which one will come across in Korba area and Roxy.

Although there are now different areas that are considered part of Heliopolis, the ones which are mainly thought about when the name is mentioned now are the area around AlBaron Palace, the area which is now known as Korba, as well as Roxy area; there might be other things to come into consideration but those are considered the ones mostly known to be part of Heliopolis.

There are important places to visit in Cairo, Egypt, when in comes to Heliopolis (which is also now referred to as New Egypt مصر الجديدة) and from these we would suggest Korba, where there are different buildings for you to get impressed by and there are several cafes and restaurants to sit at; this area is considered now an elite area in Heliopolis.

Just minutes away from Korba, there are two different directions to head to, either you will go to check the Roxy residence area, which is now nothing but a lot of shops and a crowded area, or else you will head to the other direction and check the Baron Palace, which is considered a much better plan.

The Baron Empain Palace was the residence of Baron Empain who was a famous Egyptologist and prominent Belgian Entrepreneur. This palace was inspired by the Hindu temple of Angkor Wat in Cambodia; it was designed by the French architect, Alexandre Marcel and was decorated by Georges Louis Claude.

The Baron palace is one of the most important landmarks of Heliopolis, Cairo, Egypt, because it is not only perfectly designed, but because it is the place where the person, Baron Empain, who established Heliopolis was living. Establishing Heliopolis was done with the help of Boghos Nubar.

Heliopolis, Cairo, Egypt is the location of Cairo International Airport and it is considered the center of the New Egypt area. Heliopolis is also considered the place where the wealthy Egyptians tend to live, especially when it comes to the area surrounding the Baron Palace.

Around the are of the Baron palace, you might find some outstanding buildings as well, these go back to important characters in the old times but which mostly now belong to the Egyptian Military or else are used as a presidential guest house.

This area is too close to the airport, only 10 minutes away by car, the problem comes when there are traffic jams in Salah Salem street, which is considered the most famous. The only problem one might find if decided to stay in Heliopolis during his/her trip to Egypt is the fact that it is not so close to the other landmarks and historical areas which one would be willing to visit in the same way it would be if one stayed in the downtown area (   • Downtown Cairo; The Place of the Hist...  ).

There are lots of things to see in Heliopolis, Cairo, Egypt, when it comes to the religious part, there are different mosques, cathedrals, and there is even AlMissalah street synagogue, making this place a mixture of religions that could satisfy everyone's needs.

It is interesting to see things that hold mythical stories behind such as the case with Al Baron palace which is closed to the public. This place is referred to as the house of ghosts or the house of horror due to the different sounds of furniture moving at night or else the lights that flash inside the tower that happen at night and which were even seen by those residents who are living around the palace.

There are different things to do in Cairo, Egypt, in general, such as heading to the Egyptian Museum (   • The Egyptian Museum in Cairo; Ancient...  ), enjoying the Nile River (   • Nile River Cairo  Part of the Longes...  ), heading to the Pyramids (   • Pyramid of Djoser in Sakkara & the Py...  ), or even checking the hidden treasures of this country which might be related to gardens, restaurants, and night life, or else heading to old Cairo area and enjoying the hidden gems that one could find there (   • Old Cairo, Moez Street; Walking throu...  ).

Have you been to Heliopolis, Cairo, Egypt? What do you think about this place?
