The female, nicknamed "Big Red" by the viewing community in honor of Cornell University, is noticeably larger, with a darker head, nape, and throat. She has a numbered band on her right leg. The male, Arthur, was named after the founder of the Cornell Laboratory, Arthur A. Allen. He is bandless, has brighter eyes, and a paler chest, head, and nape than Big Red.
Records show Big Red was banded in the nearby town of Brooktondale, New York, during its first fall in 2003. Local birders first spotted Arthur on the Cornell University campus as a rookie in 2016.
It is difficult to tell if the chicks are male or female just by looking at them, but the females tend to be noticeably larger than the males as early as three weeks after hatching. The only way to know for sure is through DNA testing.
