ℹ The Big Bear Valley is impacted by the Line Fire that started on 9/5.
The Line Fire is at 36,480 acres with 18% contained, personnel was increased by 1081 since yesterday to a total of 3,179. The evacuation order for southwest of Big Bear remains in place, Highway 18 toward Lucerne Valley is the only exit.
This mandatory evacuation order does not affect the eagle habitat, which remains in the voluntary evacuation zone. There is NO immediate threat to the nesting area.
After advancing rapidly toward the Big Bear valley all Monday, the fire’s progress somewhat slowed down today under moderating winds. Weather pattern is forecast to continue to change with wind direction shifting to WNW by Friday, and marine influence working its way further inland, bringing moisture to the area. This should assist firefighting personnel in fire fighting effort and perimeter control.

Even though the smoke appeared to be more dense on cameras today, our solar batteries got a much better charge than yesterday. This suggests that the smoke column may not be as tall.

ℹFor those unfamiliar with the area: the Line Fire is still several thousand feet down the mountain. There are several high peaks and ridges in between the fire and our nesting habitat, as well as about 5 miles (as the eagle flies) of rugged terrain.
Jackie and Shadow were seen together in the Roost Tree on 9/5, before the fire started. One of them was seen in the Roost Tree on 9/9. It is not unusual for them to be less active during wildfires, they may even leave the area for a period of time to avoid smoke.

ℹThe cams are installed in a remote forest & are 100% solar powered. During adverse events, planned disconnects may be initiated for Cam2 to preserve power for Cam1.

HUGE and well deserved Thank You to all the brave firefighters and support personnel working to keep us safe! Their dedication and hard work is appreciated beyond words.

Thank you everyone for keeping Sandy and all Big Bearians, as well as Jackie, Shadow and all wildlife in your thoughts. In the meantime, we will keep an eye out for eagle sightings, and be holding positive thoughts that the ‘evacuation warning’ for their nesting habitat remains only a precautionary warning.

We will keep you updated as the situation progresses. ❤
