ℹ The Big Bear Valley is impacted by heavy drift smoke from the Line Fire burning down the mountain.
An evacuation warning has been issued for the area of Big Bear Valley from the dam to Cactus Road. Although the eagle habitat is in the evacuation warning zone, there is NO immediate threat.
As of 9/9, the Line Fire is over 25,000 acres, 5% containment, 1708 total personnel. Since two out of three roads to Big Bear have been closed, the only exit route is Highway 18 towards Lucerne Valley.
Jackie and Shadow's nesting habitat is located about 10 miles away from the fire as the eagle flies, and several thousand feet up the mountain.
It is not unusual for Jackie and Shadow to be less active during major wildfire events. However, one of them was spotted in the favorite roost tree tonight (12:23 video timestamp)!
We also saw many visiting birds today: Darkeyed Juncos, Pygmy Nuthatches, Whitebreasted Nuthatches, Redbreasted Nuthatches, White headed Woodpeckers, Steller's Jay etc. They could be migrating individuals escaping the fire.
