River tubing down the Navua River was the best way to wrap up our weeklong dive trip. We got a tour of the village, had the chance to connect with local villagers, and saw how tourist dollars went directly to support improvements on their land, like integrating solar energy and efficient agriculture systems. Our guides then took us to visit some gorgeous waterfalls with the opportunity to do some cliff jumping before a hearty and colorful lunch break on the river.

Then, the tubing began! I was happy to see river rapids going which made it an exhilarating ride. We took a pause in an area where the river calmed down and all linked tubes. I didn’t expect what happened next…

Our guides began singing to us! Actually, singing is an understatement harmonizing with the most angelic voices in their beautiful Fijian language. It brought some of us to tears at how touching of a gesture it was in that moment, embraced by the lush and humbling jungles that lined the rivers edges, which seemed to be singing to us as well!

If you’re on the fence like we were about partaking in this excursion, I’m here to let you know that for me, it was well worth it after all and I couldn’t imagine my trip to Fiji without this!

Throw in a kava ceremony with your local village chief to get the full cultural experience!
