I’ve always wanted a kitten but for many years work and my circumstance prevented me from getting one. Then the covid pandemic happened. I went home to our house in the countryside since our company closed temporarily.
It was in the early morning of 03 January 2021 that a skinny starving kitten suddenly jumped down from underneath my friend’s pickup truck. (My friend was picking me up for our morning jog.) The kitten meowed loudly as if saying, “I’m here.” He wasn’t much to look at. He was dirty, covered with fleas, and his ears were full of black gunk. He had ear mites! We estimated he was about 3 months old or younger. He was tiny.
Apparently the night before, the kitten entered the garage of my friend. We’re guessing my friend’s dogs chased the kitten and it ran and climbed the truck’s tire and hid under the chassis. So he was clinging to dear life when the following early morning, my friend drove to my place. It was a miracle he didn’t fall off the truck and got ran over. But he must had been very scared. And so that morning the kitten chose me to be his mum. After our morning jog, I bought a plant called ficus triangularis and this gave me the idea to name the kitten, Ficus. I then started making funny videos of Ficus and his interactions with our 2 shih tzus. A friend suggested that I upload the videos on YouTube . So a month after I got Ficus I created the OurFurryTribe channel .
Then 7 months later, in midAugust 2021, my sister Diane and I got infected with the covid19 virus. I never felt so sick in my life. It was terrible but hospitals were full. Diane was eventually rushed to the ICU. Suddenly I was alone in the house with just my sister’s 2 dogs Emma & Shirley, and Ficus. For 17 days Diane was in the ICU until she expired on 05 September 2021. It was 8 months and 2 days to the day Ficus came into my life.
During those 17 excruciating days, Ficus was by my side. He probably sensed I was very sick and things were not right. He curled beside me on my bed. His warmth and his purring comforted me. Having him with me gave me solace. It does make a world of difference to have a pet when your world is in turmoil.
I tell my friends that Ficus saved me. He, a homeless helpless kitten came into my life not knowing I would need him more. There were moments when I felt desolate but I’d look at this sweet kitten who needed to be taken cared of. And Diane’s beloved dogs Emma & Shirley, and her 3 backyard cats Adele, Beyoncé, and Rihanna, they too need someone to care for them. So life goes on. After all they have become my family.
