Hello dolls,
and welcome to part seven of my Vlogmas series! Today I'm explaining 1966 fashion, music and film.
For the next three weeks I'm on a daily journey through history for this years Vlogmas as I break down each year from 1960 to 1979! I'll explore the most iconic moments in fashion, music, and film, uncovering how they reflected the culture and defined the era. From swinging sixties style to seventies disco fever, it's a celebration of two transformative decades.
Welcome to1966—a year of rebellion, innovation, and cultural upheaval. A year when fashion, politics, music, film, and pop culture collided to reshape the world in ways that would reverberate through the rest of the decade. As the 60s reached their zenith, society was caught in a whirlwind of bold innovation, youthful rebellion, and cultural revolution.
Fashion became an expression of freedom and defiance, while politics saw the rise of social movements that questioned the status quo. In music, artists like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan pushed the boundaries of genre, experimenting with folk, rock, and psychedelic sounds. Meanwhile, film brought avantgarde visions to the mainstream, with masterpieces like Michelangelo Antonionis BlowUp reflecting the turbulence and optimism of the times. From the streets of London, with the rise of mod culture and the rise of Twiggy as THE ITgirl of the 1960s, to the studios of Hollywood, 1966 was a year that marked the transition from the cultural revolution of the early 60s to the heady, experimental spirit of the late decade. It was a defining moment in history, where art, activism, and style merged into a new, transformative era.
Fashion in 1966 was a bold blend of counterculture defiance and classic elegance. Mod style continued to dominate, with geometric shapes, bold colors, and sleek lines becoming everyday staples. Mini skirts were iconic, paired with daring colors and patterns, while designers like Mary Quant popularized the look. The “nuder look,” exemplified by Rudi Gernreich’s wool dress, pushed boundaries.
Men’s fashion in 1966 mirrored the dynamic trends, with tailored suits and slim cuts influenced by Mod style. Jackets, narrow lapels, and Chelsea boots were popular. Avantgarde pieces like Paco Rabanne’s plastic swimsuits symbolized the era’s modern flair. Accessories like trench coats and cardigans rounded out the look, while hairstyles, including Twiggy's pixie cut, became widespread.
1966 also saw the rise of Twiggy, the “face of 1966.” Her androgynous look and pixie haircut redefined beauty standards and marked a shift toward youthful, minimalist fashion. Twiggy’s impact signified the end of the curvaceous ideal, embracing youth and freedom.
Musically, 1966 was a gamechanger. The Beatles released Revolver, experimenting with new sounds, while Bob Dylan’s electric rock reshaped the genre. The British Invasion continued with bands like The Rolling Stones, influencing American rock. 1966 marked a cultural turning point, with new music, fashion, and social movements shaping the decade.
Tomorrow, we’ll take a closer look at 1967, the year that brought Bonnie and Clyde, the big mac and the summer of love!
All my lovin,
xx Emma
