The November 14, 2024 meeting of the DuPage Birding Club featured "A Closer Look at Gull Identification" with Amar Ayyash, Chicagoland resident gull expert and author of "The Gull Guide," published by the Princeton University Press.

Amar is an expert on the gulls of North America and an evangelist for "gull recreation." He coordinates the Illinois Ornithological Society’s Annual Gull Frolic on Lake Michigan, hosts the popular website anythinglarus.com, and administers the North American Gulls Facebook group, found at   / nagulls  .

He is often found speaking at birding events, leading field trips throughout the continent, and traveling the world to photograph and study gulls. He has published a number of papers and articles on gull identification, distribution, and molt.

In his talk, Amar highlighted key identification field marks for separating our most common gull species and touched on oftenignored topics in gull study such as the aging process, plumage, and molt. This is the meeting to view if you want to learn more about the diverse world of gulls.
