As full time RV Travelers in our Grand Design fifth wheel, we have stayed at many campgrounds in the states and Canada. And we found a common problem with 30 and 50 Plugs connected to shore power is burning or melting of the plug or the socket. This can be dangerous for your camper.

Our 50 to 30 amp adapter has been burned/melted a few times over the last couple of years. This made me wonder why this was happening. It is more common on a 30 amp socket because it is more likely to be overloaded than a 50 amp plug that has much bigger contacts. Plus, though our camper is a 50 amp, we rarely have a 50 amp power pedestal. These 30 amp sockets get worn out, corroded, oxidized and damaged overtime which causes the contacts to build up resistance under load and heat up. I go over why I think this happens and a couple of things you can do to keep it happening to your Plug.
